Walks in Glendalough

Glendalough is a wonderful picturesque glen in County Wicklow. There are numerous pathways to choose from them and each of them offer its own delights. .

There are a choice of walks in Glendalough. We parked in the car park beside the Upper Lake , and beyond the monastic site. We walked on a road that became a track beside and above the Upper Lake, till we reached the top of the lake. PicnicHere we can see the remains of the mining industry which was active from 1853 till 1957. Lead was the main ore found in the mines of Glendalough. Return back to the car park and you will find a place for a picnic.

Path to Laragh Leaving the picnic area take the green road to Laragh. Most of the journey is through trees. About halfway it is possible to leave the road and cross a small bridge which leads to the monastic settlement. Once in Laragh it is possible to walk back to the car park or better still make use of one of the pubs or tea rooms, and await for the transport to arrive.

St Kevins BedThe 6th century hermit St Kevin founded what became a monastic settlement which flourished for 6 centuries. Looking across the Upper Lake his hermits cave known as Kevin's Bed can be seen in the rock face. Excavated 30 feet above the lake the narrow cave is difficult to reach other than by boat. Here St Kevin passed the earliest days of his solitary life.

The monastic site on the road to Laragh is worth a visit. Here are the remains of a large and thriving monastic site. The buildings restored by the Board of Works are very impressive. Round TowerThe dominant feature is the round tower which stands 103 ft high.
